Why Our Charcoal Is Never "Instant-Light"
You won't find chemical-soaked "instant-light" charcoal on our shelves. Instant-light briquettes are pre-soaked in petroleum lighter fluid, and that comes at a cost — to your food's flavor, your health, your wallet, and the air. Here's why we stick to pure, additive-free charcoal instead.
Pure Flavor, No Chemicals
Instant-light charcoal is soaked in petroleum lighter fluid that can leave a harsh chemical taste on your meat and vegetables. You must also wait until the flames die down and the coals turn gray before cooking — or your food tastes like fuel. Our 100% natural charcoal contains no additives, so the only flavor is the food.
Safer to Light & Store
Lighting instant-light charcoal releases heavy petroleum fumes you shouldn't breathe in, and the added chemicals can cause sudden, high flare-ups that increase the risk of burns. Their flammable bags are also more dangerous to store near heat or in enclosed spaces.
Cleaner for the Air
Burning petroleum-based accelerants releases more volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and smog-forming emissions than plain wood charcoal. Our natural charcoal is the cleaner-burning, lower-impact choice.
Better Value
You pay more per pound for instant-light briquettes than for standard plain briquettes or natural lump charcoal. Factory-direct, additive-free charcoal gives you more heat — and more grilling — for your money.
Longer Shelf Life
If an instant-light bag is ripped or left open, the chemical accelerant evaporates over time and the charcoal becomes difficult to light. Our pure charcoal stays ready to use for years when stored dry.
The Better Way to Light
Skip the chemicals entirely. A chimney starter lit with a single fire starter or newspaper gets our lump and Binchotan glowing cleanly in minutes — no lighter fluid, no aftertaste, just real charcoal performance.
How to Light Our Charcoals

Arrange the charcoal upright in the chimney, leaving some space for airflow.

Place the charcoal chimney on a hotplate, burner or portable stove. You can also use fire starters and place it underneath the charcoal chimney.

Turn the burner on high for 15 minutes until the charcoal turns bright red throughout. After 15-20 minutes on high, turn off the burner and allow the charcoal to fire up on its own for an additional 10 minutes.

When the charcoal is bright red throughout, it's ready to use. Using tongs, carefully move the lit binchotan to your grill or brazier. Use the tongs to place the charcoal evenly for optimal heat.

Using tongs, carefully move the lit charcoal to your grill or brazier. Use the tongs to place the charcoal evenly throughout the grill for optimal heat distribution. Then place the grilling grate on top.

Enjoy the best quality grilling for up to 6 hours!

When finished grilling, you can re-use the charcoal. Simply starve the charcoal of oxygen by placing it in a metal container with an air tight lid. You can also place the charcoal one by one in water and defuse them. Once cooled, place them on a metal tray and leave them outside to dry for 24 hours. Once they are dried, they are ready to use again.
